Food Porn Friday | Ess-A-Bagel: Pwning Toasters Since 1976

When I was in NY a few weeks ago, my friend Jon took me to one of his favorite bagel spots in the city, Ess-a-Bagel. I was slightly hungover and starving to the point of extreme irritability, so I got a little discouraged when I saw that the line was out the door and over 20 people deep. He assured me that the line moves quickly because they don’t toast their bagels. In fact, they don’t even own a toaster. Ummm… what? I was in complete shock. How could a bagel shop, that is considered one of the best in New York, not OWN a toaster?

Suspect, I know. What’s with this lack of toasting, you ask? The bagels are served fresh right out of the oven. They are still piping hot from baking so the cream cheese melts just fine. My favorite part about the bagel was the crispy outer shell, it still had a perfect toasty crunch when I bit into it. The cream cheese got messy, but I loved every second of it. This was the best bagel I’ve had to date…it b*tch slaps my go-to bagel spot from when I lived in NY and (I’m gonna go there) toasted bagels everywhere.

  7. You literally just lived my ultimate food dream… I am in love with untoasted bagels! If I could pick one food to eat for the rest of my life it would be huge, untoasted, freshly baked NY bagels with cream cheese and strawberry jam… pure HEAVEN.
