Bloody Mary’s and Seafood | Tides | Nahant, MA

Nahant isn’t the classiest of beaches in the Boston area, but after my recent experience there, I have absolutely nothing negative to say about it. Yea there might be a syringe or two sticking out of the sand and a drug deal taking place at the blanket next to you (kidding!)…but honestly where else can you drive 30 minutes, park for $3, hang out in the sun, eat fresh seafood, drink the best bloody mary in New England (more on that in a sec), and be back in Boston by 7 for a night out? Nowhere.nahant beachTides looks like the kind of restaurant that can serve pre-frozen popcorn shrimp and get by solely because of its primo location and beach front patio, but the quality of the food and drinks far surpassed my expectations. The food was fresh and well-prepared and the service was genuinely friendly (ask for Jody). Lesson learned. Don’t judge a restaurant by its clientele interior design.

tides menuYou can imagine my surprise when I saw “the best bloody mary you’ll ever taste” on the menu. I was almost offended. How on earth is that possible? But then… I tasted it. It was balanced with sour and tangy flavors and a vinegary spice.  There wasn’t too much of a horseradish flavor, but it worked. After racking my brain, I couldn’t think of a specific bloody mary I liked better than this one. Therefore I am naming it the best bloody mary in New England until proven otherwise. I realize this is semi-ridiculous. Challenge me! I think East Coast Grill would probably give Tides a run for their money, but I still haven’t tried it. Thoughts?

tides bloody maryIt was also a perfect day to eat my first lobster roll of the summer. Tides offers two options, one lobster salad option and one pure lobster and butter option. We went with pure lobster — always pure lobster.

tides lobster rollIt was everything I could ask for (side of melted butter) and more (sweet potato fries).

tides fisherman's platterWe also split the fisherman’s platter: fried clams, fried haddock, fried onion rings, FRIES, and fried scallops. Everything was cooked perfectly and served with plenty of lemon and malt vinegar.

tides stuffed mushroomsWe also threw an order of stuffed mushrooms in there. Not really going with the theme of the day, but why the hell not? Stuffed mushrooms are the best. These ones were huge and overflowing with cheesy breadcrumbs.

If you ever find yourself in Nahant beach, gives Tides a try. More importantly, give Tides bloody mary a try.

I think The Lobster Pot in Provincetown makes some of the best Bloody Marys in New England!
{Black peppercorn, lemon peel & pepperoncini infused vodka (spiciest ever!) and homemade Bloody Mary mix} for the win. I haven’t tried Tides though, so looks like I should make a trip to Nahant!
