It’s officially here! Cinco de Mayo!! The Mexican holiday I’m pretty sure no one actually knows anything about, except for that you’re supposed to eat lots of Latin food and drink copious amounts of margaritas. In lieu of the festive holiday City’s Best had me do a write up of some of my favorite taco to-go joints in town, which you can read more about here.
Since I’m currently hoarding a handful of photo’s showcasing these Mexican masterpieces I figured why not show off some of the “best of the best” while offering up a few insider tips along the way. And yes, these are in order of favorite, starting with the underdog….These tacos filled with carnita’s (pulled pork) come courtesy of Temazcal, Todd Hall’s newest venture located in Fort Point. To be honest, I wasn’t overly impressed. The tortilla was too doughy, definitely not made from corn. The flavors were a little bland, but as always I enjoyed the pork. Although I’m not racing to get another order of these, I am on a mission to get back to the bar at Temazcal for the awesome selection of Margarita’s (the white grape is my fave!) and that unbeatable harbor-side view.
Boston’s most beloved burrito maker makes a pretty decent taco too; the Al Pastor hails from Anna’s Taqueria. A hot corn tortilla stuffed with pork, cilantro, beans, salsa and hot sauce, the tacos at Anna’s are served individually so you can try them all!
And when it comes to my absolute favorite tacos to-go, there are two taquerias that rain supreme…First up Dorado Tacos & Cemitas and their lengthy selection of superior tacos. It’s quite hard to make a decision when ordering off their menu with so many options to choose from, and that’s not even taking the daily specials into consideration. Pictured above is the Dorado on the left, their signature fish taco made with beer battered Atlantic white fish, cabbage, salsa fresca, radishes and spicy chipotle crema and the Swordfish special on the right, made with grilled swordfish, ginger, orange, salsa fresca, cabbage and spicy crema.
And then there’s El Pelon, the master of all things Mexican street food. I’m pretty sure their restaurant has not only burnt down once, but in fact twice, and it has still since risen from the ashes and posted up in a new location serving up great tasting, flavorful Latin food. People go ape-shit for the Caramelos and fresh Pescados (pictured above) along with everything else on the menu. Their following is cult-like and their fried plantains are to die for. Although its a bit of a trek, located on Commonwealth Ave. in Brighton right near the BC campus, it is a hike well worth it.
