I have never used this blog to shamelessly plug anything before, and I’m not about to start now. What I am about to tell you is fact, well technically it’s my expert opinion, but there’s a fine line between the two anyways. A lot of readers know (but maybe not all) that I not only love and eat food, but I work with it too at Cafeteria Boston, located on Newbury Street. I have been a server there for almost two years, while in and out of school, and could not be more in love with the food. You’d think someone would get sick of eating the same things all the time, but it’s kind of hard when your job serves up all your traditional comfort food favorites with only the best in all organic and local ingredients.
When people ask me what the best thing is, I always have to think for a minute, because everything is so good. The pizza’s, the mac n’ cheese, the salad’s, the burgers… AHHH the burgers! Cafeteria’s grass-fed burger is THE best burger in Boston. Forgive me for saying this, but all you other ridiculous burger makers with your absurdly priced $20+ beef patties claiming you’re the best (*cough cough* Back Bay Social Club), I regret to inform you that is NOT the case. This coming from a life long burger lover I can guarantee you there is no better burger in the Back Bay area than the one you’ll find at Cafeteria, and it’s only $12. I’ll also let you in on a little secret: all day, every day at the bar you can find quarter pound versions of our beef burger for just $5! It’s up to you whether you want to add on more toppings, which include avocado, crispy onions, goat cheese and fried eggs. Or just go all out with the Deluxe, a half-pound burger topped with bacon, fried egg, crispy onions and special Cafeteria sauce of course.
It’s pretty aggressive. I know. It took me a while to man up and try it, but I can tell you it’s all sorts of amAzing. It also made me realize that fried eggs + cheese burgers = kinda awesome. But the beef burgers aren’t the only thing worth drooling over, Cafeteria also serves up a great pan-seared Tuna Burger, topped with avocado and spicy mayo too.
Obviously I can’t run around eating Burger Deluxe’s all day because I’d double in size by Christmas time, so sometimes I opt for a nom-tastic salad, like the Roasted Beet salad. One of my favorites! Roasted beets mixed with goat cheese, spinach, pecans, and fennel with just a touch of olive oil and orange zest create the perfect and (dare i say it) healthy dish. Another one of my favorites, the Traditional Greek Salad, with a mix of diced tomatoes, cucumbers, onions and olives topped with feta cheese.
You’ll notice there’s no lettuce in this salad, that’s because this is a REAL greek salad. Not the type of greek salad that comes out looking like your typical house salad drenched in yogurt sauce. NO. With just a touch of olive oil and oregano for seasoning, its delicious. It’s even better when you add steak to it. MmmMmm.
Oh and then there’s the Lamb Sausage Pizza. To be fair, all the pizza’s are delicious. The Mediterranean used to be my favorite pizza until I tried the Lamb Sausage one. Ever since, it’s been hard to stay away. The lamb, the fennel, the fontina, I LOVE IT!
As always, the best is saved for last. Unfortunately, I’m realizing now, I don’t have photos of these “besties.” But I give you my word that I will get some up here soon. Everyone knows dessert is a must. I’m realizing now more than ever some restaurants have been neglecting their dessert menus and it saddens me. Luckily, Cafeteria doesn’t fall into that category. With our amazing pastry chef comes a slew of homemade pies, ice creams, sorbets and cakes that are constantly changing on a daily basis. The chocolate mousse, the cheesecake, the brownie sundae, the butter pecan AHH! Okay now I’m drooling.
Over the past year General Manager Demetri Tsolakis and Head Chef Michael Navarrete have completely revamped the restaurant and it’s menu, turning it into quite the neighborhood favorite. No longer is it the Mediterranean-inspired eatery it once was, swapping broccoli rabe and eggplant for this seasons best in heirloom tomatoes and organic spring chicken. Even the cocktail menu got a recent facelift with new favorites like the Lunch Lady (Vodka made with fresh oranges, mint, muddled orange and Aranciata) and the Greek Mythology (Metaxa seven star brandy, honey, rose water and fresh grapefruit). But don’t just take my word for it, come see for yourself! and be sure to say hi and thank me in between bites.
